I try to be knowledgeable about general topics when I am invited to a social gathering. Remember nobody wants to look like their face is blank when that unexpected topic of discussion comes from now where,better know as surprise.So I thought a little pick me up knowledge about glass blowing may save the day for someone.

Glass blowing is a process that is used to shape glass and other specialty items for all to enjoy. The key ingredients are,limestone, sand, potash, and soda ash. They must be combined and heated in a furnaced at over 2000 degree’s, this process creates the molten glass state thus the art of glass blowing is performed. In order for the artist to perform glass blowing he/she will need the Blow Pipe(this tool is a steel pipe with an air passage way throughout it’s entire length.One end has the mouth peace and the other has the larger built up area for the molten glass to gather and blow the bubble on) the tip of the blow pipe is preheated by dipping itin the molten glass as it sits in the furnace. The ball of molten glass is then gathered on the blow pipe and rolled onto a tool called the Marver.(the marver is a flat steel plate that is used for the picking up color chips or the shaping of molten glass on the end of a blow pipe or pipe with rolling action,It may also be used in the uneven cooling of the glass for a desired effect)The Marver is very important to this glass blowing process because it creates a cool exterior layer on the glass and makes it possible to shape it. The artist blows air into the Blow pipe in order to form a bubble with the molten glass.

With the glass blowing process there can be a variety of shapes created by using the tool called Tweezers. They are used to pull the glass or create more detail.Paddles are made from graphite or wood to design flat areas of glass.Jacks are used to manipulate the shapes and if you need cuts you use Straight Sheers or Diamond Shears for a larger cut.
